Karimunjawa, a group of islands, is part of sub district (kecamatan) of Jepara. It consists of 27 islands in the Java Sea. There are plenty of mangroves and other marine plants along the coast. There are five inhabited islands, namely Karimunjawa, Kemujan, Parang, Nyamuk and Genting. The islands are conserved as a National Marine Park because of its unique marine life.

Transportation

You can reach the Karimunjawa islands by air from Semarang, the provincial capital of Central Java. Deraya Air Taxi serves visitors from Semarang to Karimunjawa island. It takes about 30 minutes to get there.

Arriving at the air strip of Dewa Daru on Kemujan island, you can proceed by car for 20 minutes to the sub district capital town of Karimun Jawa. Then, you can start your trip to all islands of Karimunjawa because there are some tourist facilities such as accommodation, restaurants and transportation there.

You can also go there by boat instead of plane. You need to go by bus to Jepara from Semarang. Jepara is located about 70 kms away from Semarang. There are some regular voyages that connect Jepara and Karimunjawa island and vice versa. Another way is you can also go to Tanjung Mas harbor and then continue your trip by fast ship to Karimunjawa island.

Activities

Many beaches in Karimunjawa are covered by white sand. They are perfect places for sunbathing and diving/snorkeling. There are 5 islands which are great places for diving/snorkeling and sunbathing. If you are snorkeling/diving enthusiasts, you can visit Tanjung Gelam, Menjangan Kecil and Cemara Kecil whereas those who like sunbathing can go to the beach of Menjangan Besar and Cemara Kecil islands.

There are some other recreation activities like water cycling, wind surfing, hiking and camping. You can also visit to the grave of Sunan Nyamplung, a former leader of Karimunjawa islands. You can rent a motor boat to visit each island in Karimunjawa.

Accomodation

You can get accommodation facilities at Karimunjawa island, the site of sub district town. There are some homestays there and there is also a guest house with good facilities on Tengah island.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the islands is from April through November. You can also visit them from December through March, but because of the rainy season, you may experience stronger winds and bigger waves.
