The expression “Shop till you drop” could be associated with Jakarta. It has super-sleek, ultra-chic malls, selling everything from designer branded clothes to indigenous arts and crafts. If you have an eye for a bargain and passion for fashion, Jakarta is the place to be. We went on a shopping spree to four of the best malls in the city and checked out what’s in store.
Mal Taman Anggrek
A world of shopping, dining and entertainment possibilities awaits you at Mal Taman Anggrek. Situated near the Tomang intersection Jalan Letjen S. Parman, West Jakarta, this shopping center has over 450 retail outlets. You can buy almost anything at Taman Anggrek. Couture designers rub shoulders with middle-of-the-range labels such as Guess, G2000 and Marks & Spencer; you can buy a state-of-the-art stereo and then, stock up on CD’s; or kit yourself out with the latest sports equipment from illustrious manufacturers such as Nike and Reebok. One of the biggest and the best surprises to be found here is the ultra modern Sky Rink. You can watch the skaters from the food court in Jakarta, which overlooks the rink.
Plaza Indonesia
Located adjacent and below the Grand Hyatt Hotel, the prestigious Plaza Indonesia and Galeria Grand Hyatt offer the ultimate in sophisticated shopping. Couture designers such as Gucci, Donna Karan, Christian Dior and Claude Montana offer their latest collections, while salons including Rudy Hadisuwarno, Red Earth and Guerlain provide the best in hair and beauty. Leather handbags and accessories are available from Louis Vuitton and Prada, as well as renowned shoe boutiques, such as Salvatore Ferragamo and Charles Jourdan. There is a comprehensive range of food outlets such as Cafe Excelso, Cafe Oh La La and Dome Cafe. A good range of quality fast food is also available.
Plaza Senayan
Considered the fashion center of Jakarta, Plaza Senayan is a great place for all shopaholics. Leading lights in the fashion world – including Prada, Versace, Moschino, Dolce & Gabbana and Armani – have their main Indonesian outlets in this beautifully designed mall. The Metro department-store chain has its largest Indonesian branch here and its spacious layout makes shopping a delight. If you need a little light relief, fine dining and fast food restaurants are plentiful and varied. Cafe Alessandro Nannini, Cafe Mama Mia and Cafe Wien are the perfect excuse for a break.
Mal Pondok Indah
This comprehensive mall is situated in the leafy residential area of Pondok Indah in South Jakarta. The range of shops, restaurants and activities make this a great center for one-stop shopping and entertainment. World famous designers are well represented here (Giordano, Kenzo, Versace and Hugo Boss) and some trendy labels that are not quite high profile. The Metro department store makes another appearance with potential purchases galore – from cosmetics and clothes to toys and homeware. The luxurious six-screen cinema here has all the latest hits plus huge, comfy arm-chairs and fantastic acoustics.
